Pseudo Spring… Break, That is…

Posted in Cricket, Homeschooling, Precious, Pumpkin, Spring Break, Sunshine at 8:15 pm by Anne

This past week was spring break for the local institutional schools (public, university, and so on).  We do not follow the institutional school schedule. We are homeschoolers! (What can I say, it’s one of the benefits…)

Ok, I have to stop here because Pumpkin was reading over my shoulder and choked out “BENEFITS!?!?!?!?”  I confess, my head swivelled. “You don’t consider taking two weeks off in the middle of October when all the other public school kids are slaving away to go to Disney in the sweet season BENEFITS????”  She rapidly rethought her position and began bobbing her head in agreement while muttering something about ‘thought you meant all the extra school work we get done’… ungrateful wretch that she is… harumph.  So I turned to her and said that for penance she could go make me a fresh cup of tea.  I’m pleased to inform you all that she burst out laughing. *big grin* (As it was purely amusement at the audacity of my request, and not disrespectful, I consider that an indicator of successful parenting.)  Once her mirth was under control, she said she WOULD make me a fresh cuppa, because she loves me. Awwwwwwwwwww.

Where was I… So when my children heard it was spring break and all the public school kids were going to be out for the entire week they turned speculative gleams mom-ward.  It was MY turn to burst into laughter.  I am so not that easy. After informing them that we would certainly not be taking off an entire week thankyouverymuch, I granted that we might take a day off as nice weather was in the forecast. They thought this a lovely concession and went away happy discussing which day they would choose to take off. As if they would get a choice. HA.

Tuesday was lovely so we took the afternoon off (I had intended to do so provided we schooled in the morning and had nice weather) and all day Wednesday.  Both days were the peak weather for the week and by far the best weather we’ve seen since last fall.  Warm enough that the girls were out in shorts and bare feet, playing in the grass and the stream that runs through our back yard.  By Wednesday afternoon, they had used up a good bit of that spring fever and settled a bit.

My girls aren’t your average girls, they aren’t the type who only think of boys and make-up and clothes. When they get out, they ride bikes, swing on a rope, play dart guns or soccer with the boys down the street, shoot bb or pellet guns/bows and arrows, try to get a thrown knife to stick every time, track animals in the woods and by the stream (for fun, we don’t kill them) etc… however the usual result of being shoo’d out of doors is that they end up reading books on a blanket or beach towel in the sun instead of inside. The cats joined them for some love and provided the occasional break from the books.

Thursday saw the return of cold weather. Despite the tentative shoots put up by bulbs, new growth on trees, etc, spring is still some weeks away.  It was back to the grindstone for us as well.  Lessons done while the weather is dreary mean lighter days when the sun beckons and warm breezes blow. Still, even though it wasn’t REALLY spring, it was a blessing and a nice break with hints of the glory to come.

Mother/Daughter Weekend

Posted in Precious, Trips at 2:47 am by Anne

Precious (dd 10) and I went on a Mother Daughter trip together last weekend to Chicago.  We went to the Field Museum and saw the Tut exhibit, shopped at American Girl Place and Borders on the Magnificent Mile, saw the Tribune building, the Water Tower, some magnificent sculptures and paintings in the Hilligoss Gallery, the Lego store, several chocolate stores such as Ghirardelli and Godiva, Teavana – where I discovered Precious has excellent taste in tea… she chose the most expensive and rare tea in the store as her favorite… Monkey Picked for all you forum junkies… her Aunt Tracy was so proud, had High Tea at the Ritz, went to the Shedd Aquarium… and walked. a. lot.

As usual on these mother/daughter trips, I learned a lot about my daughter, just as I did with her sisters before her.  I came away awed yet again that she is my child… She is truly unique.

I pray that God helps me to be the mother that she needs… That is the only way I’ll ever be able to rise to the challenge.

Poetry…

Posted in Books, Poetry, Precious at 11:51 pm by Anne

Precious (10yo) is into poetry.  Oh, I knew she liked it… mainly because I keep finding one of our big volumes of poetry out around her favorite parts of the house… but who knew she had such good TASTE? (Not to mention the serious pride issues I get from my severely dyslexic child loving poetry. *snort chuckle*)  Today she chose the following poem to use for penmanship practice…

Even Such is Time by Sir Walter Ralegh

Even such is time that takes in trust,
Our youth, our joys, our all we have,
And pays us but with age and dust,
Who in the dark and silent grave,
When we have wandered all our ways,
Shuts up the story of our days.
But from this earth, this grave, this dust,
My God shall raise me up, I trust.

We may have to get her some more volumes of poetry for her upcoming birthday.  Books

Growing Girls…

Precious (daughter #2) has decided that she is ready to wax her eyebrows for the first time. Do you know how hard it is to successfully wax a giggling eyebrow?

I’m not ready…

Pet Semetary x4

Posted in Pets, Precious at 10:36 pm by Anne

We took a few days to recuperate from the pre-Christmas work, but life doesn’t ‘hold’ well. Late Tuesday, December 27th, Precious’s bunny Grayling died. It was very sudden, as these things evidently can be with rabbits, and the whole house was suddenly plunged into mourning. I was at Nancy’s house having coffee and girl talk, when a sobbing dd showed up at the door and requested my presence with the news. The rest of the evening was spent in funeral preparations (which didn’t take place until the next evening due to the hour and dh’s return to work the next morning), and emotional counseling of the bereaved which basically constituted four children and the remaining bunny. My children are convinced that their pets go to heaven and wait for them in their house there, and this thought was voiced repeatedly in hushed and broken tones along with apologies and assumptions of personal (and completely unmerited) guilt (which of course were explained away). We battled the sniffles and sobs with stories of the various shared experiences we’d had with the bunny, and soaked many a tissue when the grief welled anew. I gently reminded the girls that bunnies tend to bond so tightly that they can mourn themselves to death if a companion dies, just in case this should happen, I wanted them to be prepared. While that may yet happen, the bunny seems now in more danger of dying due to lavish attention, feeding, treats and love in an attempt to comfort him and prevent such a loss. I suppose there are worse ways to go.
